After six long seasons (some better than others…) we now reached the end of Game of Thrones. What can we say, it was an absolute whirlwind of emotions from start to finish:

  • we were shocked by the Red Wedding
  • we were sad when Hodor held the door
  • we were happy when Joffrey shut up
  • we were angry through most of season 8

But there was one moment that really got everybody to the edge of their seats. A moment when everybody was absolutely awe-struck and amazed.

The moment Sir Gregor “The Mountain That Rides” Ceglane, a.k.a The Mountain, entered the fighting arena…

Seemingly out of nothing came this absolute BEAST with one of the most epic fights – and brutal endings – of all of Game Of Thrones.

After that, everybody wanted to know who the hell that guy was and, more importantly, if he was just as insane in real life!

The Mountain in real life

Turns out, in real life The Mountain is, well, really a mountain of a man with more muscle strength than anyone on earth. Literally…

Meet Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, an Icelandic professional strongman with an absolutely AMAZING track record, currently being the only man ever to have won these three competitions in the same calendar year:

  • World’s Strongest Man
  • Europe’s Strongest Man
  • Arnold Strongman Classic

Yes, that’s correct, all three of those he won in the same year! In other words, Hafthor (often shortened to “Thor”, which seems fitting for a man with godlike superstrength; his last name Björnsson also means “bear’s son”…) is currently the strongest man on earth.

Honestly, they couldn’t have picked a better man to play The Mountain! And wait till you see some of his INSANE workout routines; it’s out of this world!

His diet

First, let’s have look at the guy’s diet, because a body like that needs some serious calorie intake!

Because how big is The Mountain exactly? Oh, nothing weird…

  • Height = 6 ft 9 in (206cm)
  • Weight = 397-441 lb (180-200kg)

I repeat: they couldn’t have picked a better man to play The Mountain! But that body needs taking care of, and do that, you need calories. A LOT of calories.

Breakfast: 6-8 eggs
2 hours later: Shake with 200g oats, banana, protein powder, peanut butter and strawberries
2 hours later: 400g chicken breast, sweet potatoes, vegetables
During workout: Protein shake with creatine
Post-workout: Meat, rice, potatoes, vegetables
2 hours later: Fish, sweet potatoes, vegetables
Before bedtime: Casein protein

 

When you’re a professional strongman, eating becomes a fulltime job…

This diet might not seem that impressive at first glance, but trust me, you will struggle to keep this up every day. You will struggle even more to eat this every day and not get fat…

For that, you need to work out hard; day in, day out. So let’s have a look at some of his insane exercises and workouts!

His workout

Ok, now the nutritional plan of The Mountain is covered, it’s time for the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the reason why you’re here: his crazy workout routines!

So how does a man like that go about in the gym? Here’s an example workout routine of a day in the life of The Mountain:

  • First set (x3)

357 lb (162kg) loglift
357 lb (162kg) axle
231 lb (105kg) dumbbell
298 lb (135kg) block press

  • Second set (x2)

408 lb (185kg) log press

  • Third set

485 lb (220kg) bench press (3×3)
441 lb (200kg) bench press (x7)

Ok, impressive numbers, but how does training on that level actually look like? VERY impressive!

What…a…BEAST! This is how you become the strongest man alive people, good luck topping that!

To give a bit of context, let’s have a look at some of his stats like max deadlift, squat, and bench, just to get an idea of how impressive the man really is:

  • Max deadlift = 1,045 lb (474kg)
  • Max squat = 970 lb (440kg)
  • Max bench = 551 lb (250kg)

To put it in perspective, a normal horse weighs about 1,000 lb. So does a grand piano, or about 200 stone bricks

That max deadlift is actually the Elephant Bar deadlift world record, beating the previous world record by Jerry Pritchett (1,032 lb or 468 kg).
